E&E News: New Ads Hit GOP Over Energy Prices After Tax Bill Vote

Clean energy advocates are betting that Republicans’ votes for President Donald Trump’s tax and spending law will be a liability in next year’s midterm elections.

While provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act regarding health care and taxes have gotten significant attention, some organizations have launched advertising campaigns in recent weeks calling attention to the rollbacks of renewable energy tax incentives.

They’ve coalesced around one major message in their campaigns, arguing that the law will increase electricity costs for consumers at a time when everyday costs are still rising and Trump has promised to bring prices down.

Chris Moyer, a Democratic consultant, said the cost focus makes sense.

“At a time when voters are laser-focused on the cost of living, it’s a politically powerful message. While the jobs message may resonate in some communities among some voters, the threat of rate hikes hits home everywhere,” Moyer said.

“Framing the issue around utility rates makes the consequences of the tax bill’s energy provisions real and immediate. It ties rising utility bills directly to the votes of vulnerable Republicans and gives voters a clear picture of who’s to blame every time they open their bill between now and November 2026,” he continued.
